10 tips to win at word games

  1. Learn the short words. Two- and three-letter words such as qi, za, xu and jo let you score on a crowded board and use awkward letters.
  2. Keep the S and the blank. They are the most flexible tiles. Don't spend them on a few points – save them for a big word.
  3. Play the Q without a U. Words like qi, qat and qadi save you from a stuck Q (worth 10 points).
  4. Aim for a bingo. Using all seven tiles earns a large bonus (50 points in Scrabble). Keep letters like E, R, S, T, A and N – they combine into many long words.
  5. Balance your rack. Try to keep about three vowels and four consonants. Too many of one kind makes words hard to find.
  6. Use the bonus squares. A triple word score or a double letter on a J, X or Z can win a game on its own.
  7. Make hooks. Add an S, -ED or -ER to a word already on the board and play a second word at the same time for double points.
  8. Swap when your rack is bad. Giving up one turn is better than playing a weak word again and again.
  9. Block the big spots. Don't open triple word squares for your opponent when you are ahead.
  10. Practise with Letord. Enter a rack, guess the best word, then check the list. You will soon recognise the patterns.

Frequently asked questions

Is Letord free?

Yes. Letord is free to use, with no sign-up.

Which word list does Letord use?

The English version uses the ENABLE word list, a common dictionary for word games. Official game dictionaries can differ slightly, so check the rules of your game.

Can I use it for Scrabble, Words With Friends or Wordfeud?

Yes. Letord shows which words fit your letters, which helps in any game with a letter rack. You can choose Scrabble or Wordfeud above the letters – the tile values change with your choice.

How do I use a blank tile?

Type a question mark ? in place of the blank tile. Letord then lets that tile stand for any letter.
